Week 9: Recognizing Nonverbal Communication and its Effects

Identifying Nonverbals (2 parts–10 points for the worksheet and 10 points for the Facebook portion)

1. Worksheet:  Watch the three video clips provided below.  Use this worksheet as you watch each of the video clips.  The questions on the chart deal with nonverbal and verbal communication taking place in these clips. I suggest printing the worksheet and then viewing the video clips. As you watch, fill in each section on the chart:  (1) identify the nonverbal symbol (e.g. frown, furrowed brow, loud voice, talking fast, etc), (2) explain what the nonverbal message(s) is/are (e.g. frustration, excitement, etc.), (3) explain what the verbal message is, (4) explain how the nonverbal and verbal messages fail to align (5) explain what the outcome/consequences of this contradiction could be as a result of the failed alignment. Be sure to print off the worksheet, answer all questions, and bring to class on Monday to receive credit.

a) Clip #1:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1nfnMUmqiA (Gladys)–need only watch the first 60 seconds

b) Clip #2:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XcMYREKcWK4 (Ross is fine)–need only watch the first 60 seconds

c) Clip #3:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avE0ozYmTDA (Rachel’s trifle)

2.  Facebook:  Find your own video clip and post it to my Facebook wall. You must find a video clip that is no longer than 2 minutes where a communicator’s nonverbal message(s) contradicts the verbal messages. Post the video clip to my facebook wall and provide a comment on the clip you have selected. Your comment should the same items included in the chart: (1) identify the nonverbal symbol (e.g. frown, furrowed brow, loud voice, talking fast, etc), (2) explain what the nonverbal message(s) is/are (e.g. frustration, excitement, etc.), (3) explain what the verbal message is, (4) explain how the nonverbal and verbal messages fail to align (5) explain what the outcome/consequences of this contradiction could be as a result of the failed alignment

Note that your video clips should be appropriate for the class with no malicious content, swearing, or nudity. Video clips and comments must be posted to my Facebook wall before class begins on Monday in order to receive credit for the assignment.
