Week 3: Self-disclosure and the Johari Window

Self-disclosure and Johari Window (2 parts—5 points for the Facebook portion and 15 points for the quiz and Johari Window exploration and worksheet)

1. Facebook:  Think of a time when someone self-disclosed inappropriately. Post an explanation of this exchange on my facebook wall.  Include the following in your explanation:

  • who was the person (e.g. was it the first time you met, long-term relationship, etc.)?,
  • provide some context for the situation,
  • tell what the message was,
  • explain why this self-disclosure was inappropriate (was it inappropriate because of the location the information was shared?, because of the type of relationship you have/had with the person?, because of the content of the message?, etc.)

Note that the information you share should be appropriate for the class with no malicious content, swearing, etc.  Comments must be posted to my Facebook wall before class begins on Monday in order to receive credit for the assignment.

2A.  Quiz:  Click on the link below and read through the information on the page.  When you finish reading the information, click on “Quick Quiz” at the bottom right hand corner.  Take the quiz.  You will report your quiz score in the woksheet portion of this lab from #3 (below).  This is the link for the website:  http://abacon.com/commstudies/interpersonal/indisclosure.html.

2B.  Exploration/worksheet:  Complete the Johari Window exploration activity.  Once you have completed the activity, print and complete the worksheet (which you will be able to access once you complete the activity).  Bring the completed worksheet to class on Monday with your name in order to receive credit for the exercise.  To access the activity and worksheet, click here.
